INSTRUCTIONS

There are FIVE questions.

Question one is compulsory.
3.
Answer any other two questions.
4.
Answer a maximum of three questions.

Candidates may use electronic calculators but not mobile phones.

Question One (Compulsory 30 marks)
A good proposal is a prerequisite to a good study. Discuss the statement outlining the
major components of a research proposal.
Question Two (20 marks)
a)
Describe the non-scientific and scientific methods for acquiring knowledge.
b)
Explain how survey research may be classified.
Question Three (20 marks)
a)
(i)
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of sampling.
(ii)
Discuss the systematic/interval random sampling technique.
b)
A population is divided into six strata. The population sizes of each stratum are:
750, 250, 150, 500, 350 and 75. A sample size of 498 is to be selected using a
stratified random sampling technique with proportionate allocation. Distribute the
sub-samples in the strata.

Question Four (20 marks)
a)
Discuss the critical consideration to be made while constructing/designing a
research instrument.
b)
Explain the steps to be followed in pre-testing/piloting a research instrument such
as a questionnaire.
Question Five (20 marks)
Conducting research in education requires the researcher to be conversant with logistical,
ethnical, human relations and legal implications of the study. Discuss.
