INSTRUCTIONS: Answer BOTH questions in Section a and any TWO questions in Section B.
Section A
1. Discuss the role of the internal and external environment of any business and its impact to hospitality and tourism firms. (10 marks)
2. 'If the primary determinant of a firm's profitability is the attractiveness of the industry in which it operates, an important secondary determinant is its position within that industry. Even though an industry may have below-average profitability, a firm that is optimally positioned can generate superior returns'. Justify this statement by Discuss the five generic strategies as proposed by Michael Porter. (20 marks)
Section B
3. Formulating a corporate strategy, selecting businesses in which to engage in is key to the success of any organization. There are a number of strategic options that a company may consider. Discuss any 5 corporate level strategies. For each strategy give the advantages and disadvantages. (20 marks)
4. Discuss the contributions of any five scholars to the field of strategic management. (20 marks)
5. In what ways is knowledge of industry life cycles helpful to the strategic management of organizations? Use cases of companies at different stages of the industry life cycle. (20 marks)
6. CEOs of large, diversified organizations continually face decisions concerning how to divide the organizational resources among diversified units and where to invest new capital, as well as which business to divest. Explain how the BCG Matrix/Portfolio Management can help managers with these decisions. (20 marks)
