QUESTION ONE (30 MARKS)
a) Discuss clearly the following statements.
i. “A country is poor because it is poor” (4 marks)
ii. “Stationary state arrives in the economy when profit reach zero” (4 marks)
iii. “Climate and Geography are the obstacles to economic growth and development in Sub-Saharan Africa.” (4 marks)
b) Since agriculture is the main sector in Kenya’s economy, then it has to be developed as the launching pad for industrialization and eventual economic development of the economy. Discuss this statement within the context of unbalanced and balanced growth model.

c) Alluding to the Harrod-Domar model, give reasons why developing countries have been unable to initiate fast growth in their economies. (8 marks)

b) With reference to Rostow’s arguments, justify the fact that economic development is a process. (10 marks)

a) What is meant by the warranted rate growth? (2 marks)
b) Are the observations of Social Dualism Theory of Boeke on the Indonesian economy applicable in Kenya? Explain clearly. (10 marks)
c) Describe the limitations of Big Push Theory in developing counties. (8 marks)

a) It is really possible for Kenya to borrow from experience of the Newly Industrialized Countries and succeed? (10 marks)
b) Explain the Lewesian Theory of unlimited supply of labour. To what extent is it applicable to problems of developing counties? (10 marks)

a) Developing countries have expressed their dissatisfaction over the Breton Wood system and instead they have consistently and constantly repeated their call for the New International Economic Order. Do you think their demands are justified, and what are their possible limitations? (14 marks)
b) Explain the Micro strategies used by different countries to achieve economic development.
