SECTION A

1) Differentiate between the following terms as applied in crop production (2 marks each)
(a) Short day plants and long day plants
(b) Zero-tillage and Conservation tillage
(c) Compost manure, Green manure and Farm yard manure
(d) Macronutrients and micronutrients
(e) Shifting cultivation and continuous cropping

2) With examples, briefly describe classification of crops based on the following categories (2 marks each):
(a) Botanical
(b) Ontogeny
(c) Commercial
(d) Economic
(e) Special purpose

3) Temperature is one of the climatic factors with significant impact on crop ecology or environment.
(a) Distinguish between maximum, minimum and optimum crop temperature (2 marks)
(b) Briefly explain how temperature influence the following (8 marks):
(i) Plant biochemical reactions
(ii) Uptake of carbon-dioxide (CO2)
(iii)Enzymatic activities
(iv) Rate of photosynthesis

4) Land preparation especially tillage or cultivation is one of the most important pre-requisite cultural
practice for one to obtain a good crop yield.
(a) State and explain at least 5 benefits of tillage (5 marks)
(b) State and explain at least 5 drawbacks associated with tillage activity (5 marks).

SECTION B:

5) As a learned farmer or food nutritionist, there are several principles that you ought to consider or
apply in order to obtain a good plant / crop stand in the field. State and briefly describe at least 5 of
these principles (20 marks).

6) Soil fertility and nutrition:
(a) Define soil fertility and nutrition (2 marks)
(b) State at least 5 ways in which soil fertility can be lost and 5 measures that should be undertaken to
improve and maintain soil fertility (10 marks)
(c) Farmers within Kitui County have sought your advice as an agricultural officer on compost manure
preparation. Briefly describe the procedures involved explaining the importance of each step
(8 marks).

7) With examples, briefly describe at least 5 fertilizer application methods (20 marks).

8) Weeds and their control:
(a) What is a weed? (2 marks).
(b) State 5 positive values of weeds and 5 direct costs of weeds (5 marks).
(c) State and explain 5 methods or agents of weed dissemination (5 marks). .
(d) Weeds can be controlled through physical, cultural, chemical and biological methods. Briefly explain
each method (8 marks).
