Course:Bachelor Of Business Information Technology

Institution: Strathmore University question papers

Exam Year:2011

STRATHMORE UNIVERSITY
FACULTY OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Bachelor of Business Information Technology
END OF SEMESTER EXAMINATION
BBIT 4103 - NETWORKING III
DATE: APRIL, 2011 TIME: 2 HOURS
INTRUCTIONS: Answer Question ONE and any other TWO questions.

QUESTION 1: (20 Marks)
a) IP Subnetting allows the creation of large numbers of smaller groups of IP addresses,
instead of simply using class A, B and C conventional rules. An institution has been
allocated the following IPv4 address space: 192.168.100.0/29.
i. Determine the default network address for this IP Address block. (1 mark)
ii. Determine the broadcast IP address for this address block. (1 mark)
iii. W hat are the valid host IP addresses that can be assigned to individual network
hosts from this address block? (3 mark)
b) The Open System Interconnection (OSI) reference model is a conceptual model
composed of seven layers, each specifying particular network functions.
i. List the seven layers of the OSI reference model. (2 ½ marks)
ii. Briefly describe a task performed at layer 1 of the OSI reference model.
(1 mark)
iii. State the OSI layer responsible for achieving network routing. (1 mark)
iv. When connecting devices in a network, different Ethernet cables may be used.
These include: straight-through cables, crossover cables and rollover cables.
Given one example of where each of these cables may be used. (1 ½ marks)
c) A university has two campus, namely Phase I and Phase II campuses. As the network
administrator for the institution, you have been asked to set up two separate Local
Area Networks (LANs) in each campus and connect the two LAN network together to
achieve an inter-campus data communication network. You have been assigned two
blocks of IPv4 address blocks: 192.168.0.0/24 and 10.10.10.0/8.
Using a sketch diagram of at least 3 host devices in each LAN, explain how you build
the two LANs and connect them together. Assume you have one Cisco 2811 series
router with two Fast Ethernet ports for interconnecting the two LANS. (9 marks)

QUESTION 2: (20 Marks)
Identify and explain how the root bridge switch will be elected by the use of the spanning tree topology in this configuration. Notice the bridge priority values and the MAC addresses assigned to each switch. (3 marks)
b) Describe the function of the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) in a redundant switched
LAN configuration. (2 marks)
c) Using a sketch diagram, describe the five states of STP process. (15 marks)

QUESTION 3: (20 Marks)
The typical hierarchical design model is broken up into three layers: access, distribution and
core;
a) Briefly explain the purpose of each of the three layers:
i. Access Layer (1 mark)
ii. Distribution Layer (1 mark)
iii. Core Layer (1 mark)
b) Briefly explain any 3 (three) benefits of hierarchical network design model. (6 marks)
c) Using simple sketches, briefly describe the importance of taking into considerations
the following principles of hierarchical network design.
i. Network Diameter (2 marks)
ii. Bandwidth Aggregation (2 marks)
iii. User Communities (2 marks)
d) Virtual LAN (VLAN) is a technology that allows a switch to create multiple broadcast
domains.
i. List three benefits of implementing VLANS in a university network
(3 marks)
ii. Using a simple sketch diagram, explain when it is necessary to use VLAN
trunking in a networking environment. (2 marks)

QUESTION 4: (20 Marks)
a) Define and give at least one example of the following:
i. Routing Protocol (2 marks)
ii. Routed Protocol (2 marks)
b) List three main categories in which routing protocols can be distinguished. (3 marks)
c) A user needs to transmit data from one source computer to one destination computer
on the internet. There are two active paths between the source and the destination of
different bandwidths and hops as shown in figure 3.
Figure 3
i. If RIP is configured as the routing protocol in the network; explain which route
the traffic would be routed through. (2 marks)
ii. Determine the route the traffic would take if OSPF is configured instead of RIP.

d) What is the difference between:
i. Packet Switching and Circuit Switching as applied in WAN technologies.
(2 marks)
ii. State one main advantage of using Frame Relay as a WAN Protocol in as
opposed to X.25 protocol. (2 marks)
e) Suppose you are the network administrator at XYZ internet service provider (ISP). A
medium sized company with 20 users on the LAN has requested 2 Mbps internet
connectivity from your company. This customer office is located approximately 15
kilometers away from the ISP nearest network node. After site survey at the customer
premises, you have noticed that they have a one LAN switch where all the users are
connected to.
Briefly design an appropriate solution for this client and describe how you would go
about the task of delivering the requested service. (5 marks)

QUESTION 5: (20 Marks)
a) Wireless LANs (WLANs) allow users to access network resources regardless of their
location as long as they are within the wireless signal coverage area.
i. State two advantages of using WLANs within an office building. (1 marks)
ii. State one limiting factor of inherent in wireless networks as opposed to wired
nwtworks. (1 mark)
b) Define the term Rate Shifting as used in Wireless networking technology. (1 mark)
c) Distingish between Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection
(CSMA/CD) and Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance
(CSMA/CA). (2 marks)
d) The RTS/CTS mechanism is considered a 2-way handshake process before
transmitting a data frame in WLAN. Explain how RTS/CTS is useful in solving the
hidden terminal problem and the exposed terminal problem in WLANs. (2 marks)
e) List and briefly explain 3 factors that can affect radio wave propagation in WLANs.
(3 marks)
f) Strathmore university is interested to build a wireless network that can allow both
students and staff to access network resources and the internet from within the campus
compound. Assume you have been assigned the task to design this new wireless
network:
i. Your first task would be to conduct a site survey to help you determine the
optimal access point locations. List at least three specific points (questions)
which you would consider during the site survey. (3 marks)
ii. What would be your overriding technical achievements as you design the
wireless network? List at least four (4) points. (2 marks)
