Self esteem is the pride you have in being who you are.If you like the person you see when you look into the mirror, then you most likely have a high self esteem.

More often than not do we meet people who cannot express themselves in front of a crowd. Its not everyone who was born a public speaker but many people gain the courage hands-on.As the phrase goes,"Its takes ten thousand hours to be perfect in something".Public speaking begins in class whereby a teacher asks a student to solve a sum on the board and explain it to the class. Here you will find students panicking and feeling shy.Unfortunately the class bursts in laughter and the student slowly walks back to his or her seat intimidated. You may find others covering their faces or even crying. Not only does this student suffer from self pity but also he ends up hating himself and feeling inferior.

This shows that self pity is one of the factors contributing to low self esteem. You may have gone through so painful times in the past which left many scars in your heart and you end up loosing the inner pride within you.It could be friends who violated your trust, loosing members of your family, burns that left your skin with scars, divorce and the list is endless. The only way you can recover is to get out of the loser feeling and start moulding the new you.As the proverb goes,"the best gold passes through the hottest furnace ",so are the people you consider as strong and successful.

Secondly, some cultural beliefs may lead to loss of self esteem. You may find a culture where the boy child is considered as being more important than the girl child. In such cases the parents takes the boy to school but marries of the girl child to some rich old man.As

the boy climbs up the career ladder, the girl degenerates into mediocrity. In such a case, she ends up losing the self love and feels less wanted. Thanks to the many organizations in Kenya that have come forward to educate such tribes of the importance of educating the girl child. There is a high chance of eventually reinstalling the self esteem in our girls.

Another factor ruining self esteem would be parental negligence. Many are the times we hear from the media how a child was sexually harassed by an old person and the case not handled with the intensity it deserved. In traditional African societies, any grown up would punish anyones child if caught misbehaving in any kind of act,but today things have changed, you can never trust even your immediate neighbour with your child. Most of these children who go through this kind of harassment end up stigmatized and that makes them withdraw from the others. They end up hating themselves and in the process end up loosing their self esteem. Such children may even suffer from depression or become sadists. Its important for parents to follow up on their children and open up to them so that they can share any worries in their lives.

The bible warns against calling others 'stupid'.I have heard a student tell me that his primary school teacher once called him stupid for failing a mathematics test.Since then, the student's performance deteriorated from dismal to worse since the teacher made him believe that he was a failure. When I met the student, he was getting an E in Math's, but fortunately I managed to change his mentality and he now scores a C.In short what I mean is,teachers and parents do not regard to your weak children as stupid, they are just talented differently. We are not all born to be Engineers,Managers,Lawyers,Doctors and Pilots, some are welders, painters, athletes, carpenters, farmers, chefs and many more well paying jobs.Furthermore, education is no longer a guarantee of success in the world today.Treat every child with the utmost care and respect.

In conclusion, everyone has their weaknesses and strengths.Build on your strengths and not trying to build on the weakness. Bring out the best in yourself. People will learn to respect you if you respect yourself first. We are all made of Gods image, and if God is perfect then no one should try to intimidate you.You are special in your own unique way.Learn how to appreciate yourself and be kind to everyone you meet because you never know what they are going through.
