QUESTION ONE
(a) Relevant information is necessary if the management of an organization has to perform the key
functions of planning, control and decision making effectively.
Required:
(I) Define the term “information”. (2 Marks)
(II) Discuss the characteristics that information should possess in order to aid management
in the performance of the key functions of planning, control and decision making. (12 Marks)
(b) How can a manager assess whether acquiring additional information is worthwhile in making a
particular decision. (6 Marks)
(c) Citing suitable examples and specifying how the meaning is determined, describe five types of data
found in an information system. (10 Marks)

One of the responsibilities of information systems managers which is often neglected is to make users
perceive information technology and information systems as powerful and valuable tools but not the
panacea for all problems in an organization. When applied thoughtfully, these tools can bring
important benefits to individuals, organizations and customers. When these tools are misapplied they
can waste tremendous amount of time, effort and money.

(b) Explain factor which affect the timing of information flow in an organization that should be
taken into account when designing information systems. (6 Marks)
(c) The management of HK Ltd. is in the process of evaluating information communication
technology (ICT) hardware for a new information system.

List ten factors which the management of HK Ltd. should consider when evaluating ACT
hardware for the new information system. (10 Marks)

(a) Using the concept of the general systems theory, describe the main management functions in a
business system and highlight the informational requirements of each function. (10 Marks)
(b) Explain five key challenges faced by management in building, operating and maintaining
information systems in organizations. (10 Marks)

(a) An absolute information system could be defined as one that has reached the end of the
economic useful life and is due for replacement by another information system.
Required:
Outline five symptoms of a system which is approaching the end of its useful economic life.

(b) The initial step in reviewing the documentation of an existing computerized information
system is to understand the type of documentation which is in place within the organization.
This documentation could be in form of hardcopies or stored in electronic form such as
document images on the company’s internal network.
Evaluate the controls which you would expect to exist in order to preserve the integrity of
electronically stored documents. (12 Marks)
