SCIENCE IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
BIT 1102: FOUNDATION PHYSICS FOR IT
DATE: APRIL 2010 TIME: 2 HOURS
INSTRUCTIONS: Answer question ONE and any other TWO questions
Some useful constants;
Acceleration due to gravity, g= 9.8 ms-2
Length Mass
1 m = 39.37 in = 3.281 ft 1 kg = 103 g
1 in = 2.54 cm 1 slug = 14.59 kg
1 km = 0.621 mi 1 lb = 0.453 592 kg
1 mi = 5280 ft = 1.609 km 1 kg = 0.0685 slug
1 angstrom = 10-10 m
1 meter = 100cm = 1000mm
QUESTION ONE
a) A hoist starts at ground level and accelerates as 1.2 m/s2 for 5s. It then moves with uniform speed
for 10s and is finally brought to rest at the top of a building with a retardation (deceleration) of 2.0
m/s2.
(i) Draw the speed time graph of the motion [6Marks]
(ii) What is the height of the building? [4Marks]
b)(i) Define freefall. [3Marks]
(ii) A worker drops a hammer from the top of a 60m high building. If the speed of sound in air
is 340 m/s, how long does the worker have to shout down to warn colleagues (if his warning is
to reach them before the hammer!) Neglect air resistance. [7Marks]
QUESTION THREE
a) (i) A wave has a wavelength of 15 cm and has a frequency of 10 waves/second. What is the speed
of the wave? [3Marks]
(ii) The speed of a wave on a rope is 50cm/s and it’s wavelength is 10cm. What is it’s frequency?
[3Marks]
(ii) A wave is traveling with a velocity of 125m/s and has a frequency of 20 waves/second. What
is the length of the wave? [3Marks]
b) The speed of sound in air is a bit over 300 m/s, and the ratio of the frequency of the light wave to
that of the sound wave is about 1000000. Suppose we make a sound wave and a light wave that
both have a wavelength of 3 meters.
(i) Determine the speed of light in air. [3Marks]
(ii) Determine the frequencies of light and sound waves [3Marks]
(iii)Write down the equation of a general harmonic wave. [2Marks]
4
(iv) Show how your equation can be modified to indicate the direction of the wave
motion. [3Marks]
QUESTION FOUR
a) A rifle is held perfectly horizontally 1.5 m over level ground. At the instant the trigger is pulled,
a second bullet is dropped from the tip of the barrel. The muzzle velocity of the gun is 80 m/s.
(i) Which bullet hits the ground first? [4Marks]
(ii) How fast is each bullet moving after 0.3 s? [4Marks]
(iii)How far away does the fired bullet land (its range)? [4Marks]
b) A coin is dropped from the top of a 100m high building.
i) How long does the coin take to reach the ground? [4Marks]
ii) Determine the speed as it hits the ground. (Neglect air resistance). [4Marks]
QUESTION FIVE
a) A car of mass 1000 kg traveling at 30m/s has its speed reduced to 10m/s by a constant breaking
force over a distance of 75m.
Find:
(i) The cars initial kinetic energy [4Marks]
(ii)The final kinetic energy [4Marks]
(iii)The breaking force [4Marks]
b) A cyclist and his bicycle has a mass of 80 kg. After 100m he reaches the top of a hill, with slope 1
in 20 measured along the slope, at a speed of 2 m/s. He then free wheels the 100m to the bottom
of the hill where his speed has increased to 9m/s.
How much energy has he lost on the hill? [8Marks]
