SECTION A: 25 MARKS

1. (a) List and explain ten (10) terminologies for newspaper design. [10 Marks]

(b) Analyse four (4) elements of both newspaper and magazine design. [8 Marks]

(c) Draw and label a dummy for a newspaper page. [7 Marks]

SECTION B: 45 MARKS

2. Explain how you can make stories fit on a newspaper page following the modular layout. [15 Marks]

3. (a) List and explain eight (8) commonly accepted rules for headline writing.
[8 Marks]

(b) Using diagrams, demonstrate seven (7) modern headline styles. [7 Marks]

4. “If you design a newspaper visually you can successfully compete with all those TVs, computer, CDs and magazines and you can keep a noble old institution – the newspaper – alive” (Schaffer, 1998). Discuss the statement above. [15 Marks]

5. In a 2009 advertising research in Kenya, out of 105 respondents, 86 preferred TV, radio and newspapers as a set for obtaining advertising messages, 4 preferred records, books and magazines, 5, internet, digital boards and SMS, 3, cinema, transport and billboards and 7 did not respond at all.
