1. (a) According to Ngugi wa Thiong’o, literature does not grow out of a vacuum, it is
given impetus and direction by society. With close reference to Taban Lo Liyong’s play, Showhat and Sowhat assess the validity of this observation.

(b) East African poets concentrate on writing about politics or their personal tribulations to the detriment of creativity. Do you agree? Support your position by using appropriate illustrations from selected poems in Poems from East Africa or An Anthology of East African Poetry. [15 Marks]

2. Critically evaluate the Techniques that Ibrahim Hussein uses in the play Kinjeketile to highlight characterization of Kinjeketile and individualize him. [20 Marks]


3. Read the poem below and answer the questions that follow:

Celebrations of the unknown

Tell me thou proud jigger,
Having stolen your way in,
Need you beat your chest
In premature celebration?

Your flying brother
Sang a song of victory
Before he tasted the toast
And met his singing end

Me thought you had learned
To taste and not devour
Unmindful of other mounts
In the neighborhood of time.

Come thou proud jigger.

(c) Identify and explain the significance of the main poetic device used in the poem.

4. Assess the significance of the juxtaposition of Tinka and Wamala in John Ruganda’s play, The Burdens and how the style communicates Ruganda’s concerns. [20 Marks]

5. With concrete examples from poems studied and read for this course, outline the factors which you consider to have influenced the development of East African Poetry.
