Question 1 [30 Marks]

(a) Differentiate between operating system software and utility software. [4 Marks]


(b) Briefly explain the roles of proxy servers and firewall as relates to computing in an Organization [4 Marks]


(c) Discuss hackers in relation to computer security. [5 Marks]


(d) What is a URL? Describe the different components of a URL. [5 Marks]

(e) Differentiate between cc and bcc. When and for what reason would you use each? [4 Marks]

(f) Giving the meaning of each, briefly discuss the following concepts as used in computers [6 Marks]
i) WYSIWYG
ii) GIGO
iii) GUI
(g) Identify and briefly explain common network classifications. [2 Marks]

Question 2 [20 Marks]
(a) You are to chair a meeting that will be attended by twenty people. You plan to send an invitation letter to each of these people to attend the meeting. The format of the letter for each is the same. Identify a tool that could be used to prepare the invitation letters. Give steps you would take to accomplish this. [10 Marks]


(b) What does cell referencing in spreadsheet applications mean? Give an example of a cell reference. [5 Marks]


(c) How is a primary key beneficial to a database application? Use an example to demonstrate use of the primary key in databases. [5 Marks]

(a) What is Computer housekeeping? Briefly explain ways of ensuring that this goal is achieved in your organization [10 Marks]

(b) Give a specific, detailed example of how you would use PowerPoint as a catering and hotel management executive. Highlight the features that make powerpoint the best tool for such an exercise. [10 Marks]

(a) Suppose you have an important message to send to a business contact in another town and have the option of using the telephone , email, teleconference or overnight mail service. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each method. [10 Marks]


(b) Your friend spends several hours every day online. Identify and explain potential hazards to this type of behavior. 10 Marks]

(a) As a professional of catering and hotel management you will handle a lot of transactions through email. It is advised that at all times when communicating via email you observe email etiquette.
(i) What does email etiquette mean?
(ii) Identify and discuss email etiquette you would follow while doing your email communication. [10 Marks]

(b) Data is represented in computers in the form of BITs, Bytes etc.
(i) Exhaustively discuss the relationships between the different units of computer storage
(ii) It is said that 1024 Bytes = 1 Kilobyte. The same format is seen in subsequent storage representations. What is the logic behind 1024 rather than 1000? [10 Marks]
