a) Briefly discuss the role of the token in a token ring network topology. [4 Marks]

b) Briefly discuss the role of proxy servers in data communication. [4 Marks]

c) What do you understand by a parity bit and what is its importance in data communication? [3 Marks]

d) Discuss giving examples simplex, half duplex and full duplex data communication modes. [3 Marks]

e) Give three business reasons for the importance of networking [3 Marks]

f) Discuss computer modems. Under what circumstances is a modem necessary for computer networks? [3 Marks]

g) How are Ethernet hubs different from Media Access Units? [4 Marks]

a) What is a public data network? Describe the differences between a circuit switched data network and a packet switched data network. Clearly identify the effects on the users of these networks. [10 Marks]

b) As a manager you are faced with a situation to either allow or deny use of BYOD in the Organization:
i) Briefly discuss BYOD
ii) Discuss the advantages and disadvantages BYOD can introduce to an Organization
iii) Explain and justify the decisions as a manager you would take to the issue of BYODs [10 Marks]

a) Explain the meaning of the term ISDN. Give examples of the following user services related to an ISDN:

b) Andy Grove, former president, chairman and CEO of Intel is quoted as saying “In future all companies will be internet companies”. One of the ways this is becoming visible is through the emerging data communication technology known as cloud computing.
i) Discuss Cloud computing and its different aspects
ii) Discuss how cloud computing has benefitted from data communication
iii) As a business executive do you or not agree with Andy Grove? Justify your answer [10 Marks]

a) E-business and E-commerce are two business approaches that utilize data communication technologies in the manner of conducting business.
i) Differentiate between E-business and E-Commerce? [5 Marks]

ii) Identify and discuss the different Ecommerce models briefly describing how data communication affects each. [10 Marks]

b) A transmission channel between two communicating computers is made up of three sections. The first section introduces an attenuation of 16dB, the second an amplification of 20dB and the third an attenuation of 10dB. Assuming a mean transmitted power level of 400mW, determine the mean output power level of the channel. [5 Marks]
