Answer question one (compulsory) and two others.

1. With clear explanations and examples, describe what kind of writers would be referred to as world writers, showing the likely sources of material for their work. [20 Marks]

2. Race and racism is a recurrent concern in literary writing because societies across the world have found themselves either as victims or perpetrators of this vice. Respond to this statement using texts by any TWO writers studied in this course. [25 Marks]

3. Basing your argument on Miguel Street by V.S Naipaul and Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky compare and contrast the representation of societal experience by the two writers. [25 Marks]

4. In Beloved, Toni Morrison insists upon the necessity of conscious and inevitable painful engagement with the past, which reveals her concerns with redemption through memory. Discuss. [25 Marks]

5. (a) “Achebe portrays the postcolonial space as a multivocal – a space defined by differences and contradictions, duplicity and ambiguity. It is a world in which meaning is constantly negotiated and a power relation between the rulers and the ruled…is not necessarily that of resistance or collaboration but can best be characterized as illicit cohabitation”.
