1. This paper has two sections A and B
2. Section A accounts for 30 marks while section B accounts for 40 marks
3. Section A is compulsory
4. Answer any two questions in section B.

SECTION A

1. Explain the following terms: [10 Marks]

(a) Pest
(b) Disease
(c) IPM
(d) Pathogen
(e) Host.

2. Outline 5 different ways of botanical control. [5 Marks]

3. Briefly discuss host plant resistance as used in insect pest control, and describe the following terms. [6 Marks]

(a) Antixenosis
(b) Antibiosis
(c) Preference.

4. (a) Outline 4 major insect pest vectors giving examples of disease they transmit and
the preferred crop. [4 Marks]

(b) Briefly explain steps involved in developing an IPM programme. [5 Marks]

SECTION B

5. (a) Discuss the management of storage pests. [10 Marks]

(b) Using named examples, discuss the various biological control methods employed
in management of insect pests. [10 Marks]

6. (a) Discuss the following field crop pests and describe the type of damage as well as
control measures. [12 Marks]

(i) Maize stalk borer
(ii) Diamond back moth
(iii) Bean fly.

7. (a) Discuss the following pesticides used in crop protection and describe their mode
of action. [10 Marks]

(i) Pyrethroids
(ii) Carbamates.

(b) Describe parasitization of ampids and outline, giving examples the various
Control strategies of Aphids. [10 Marks]
