1. Meaning can be viewed as semantic relationships. Discuss with examples, the various syntagmatic and paradigmatic relationships. [15 marks]

2. In compositional semantics, the verb plays a central role in determining the thematic
roles of constituents. Discuss the various thematic roles showing the centrality of the verb. [15 marks]

3. (a) What is indexicality? [3 marks]

(b) Discuss the various ways in which indexicality is achieved. [12 marks]

4. Discuss the notion “modality” in relation to meaning. [15 marks]

5. Critically evaluate the theory of componential analysis. [15 marks]
