1. (a) Define Epistemology and discuss FOUR of its applications to curriculum development. [10 marks]

(b) Discuss the tenability of the rationalist’s stand that all knowledge comes to us through reasoning. [10 marks]

2. (a) Discuss the tenability of the Empiricists stand that all knowledge comes to us through experience. [10 marks]

(b) Some educators say we have enough of “know-what” and “know-how”. What we need is a little “know-why”. What epistemological difficulties are likely to be encountered in knowing why? [10 marks]

3. (a) According to Hume, how far does our knowledge of “matters” of fact extend? Discuss. [10 marks]

(b) Some of the autonyms for truth are lie, error, falsehood, misconception, mere opinion. Which of these is (are) appropriate for use in epistemological discussions? Give reasons. [10 marks]

4. (a) “Scientific inquiry is based on the assumption that there is reality out there to be discovered”. Discuss the merits and demerits of holding such a view? [10 marks]

(b) “Existentialism is a philosophy that is concerned with…human beings as concrete thinking, feeling and acting individuals” Discuss the relevance of this philosophy to a prospective teacher. [10 marks]

5. (a) Education is conceptualized as a commodity that tends to focus on positive contributions for maintenance of the social systems/society. Discuss FIVE points with reference to the above statement drawing examples from the education system of Kenya. [10 marks]

(b) Define ‘Knowledge’ and discuss three conditions for an activity to quality to be called knowledge. [10 marks]
