(a) Define the term phase feeding in pigs [2 marks]
(b) Discuss the importance of phase feeding in pig husbandry. [8 marks]

(d) Describe the advantages and disadvantages of floor feeding. [8 marks]

2. Feeding additives have played an important role in feeding non-ruminant animals.

(a) Define the term feed additives. [2 marks]
(b) Describe the main classes of feed additives [6 marks]
(c) Name the feed additives that have been banned for inclusion in animal feeds, giving reasons and alternatives. [12 marks]

3. Performance of animals depend on efficiency of utilization of nutrients

(a) Illustrate (Using a diagram) and discuss the relative distribution of dietary energy in a laying chicken from ingestion of feed to production. [8 marks]

(b) Suggest ways of optimizing this process to increase production and returns to the farmer. [12 marks]

4. Mannose and sucrose are not acceptable sources of energy to some categories of pigs.

(a) List these categories of pigs and give reasons why they are unable to utilize these carbohydrates? [10 marks]

(b) Discuss the meaning of the term “limiting amino acids” showing clearly their effects on the performance of pigs. [10 marks]

(a) The effect of environmental temperature on egg production. [6 marks]
(b) The ways by which the environmental temperature can be overcome. [8 marks]
(c) The importance of ratio of amino acids to the total crude protein in the feeding of pigs. [6 marks]
