QUESTION ONE:

(a) Differentiate between classical and quantum mechanics. [2 marks]

(b) State and explain the shortcomings of the Rutherford planetary model of the atom. [4 marks]
(c) Differentiate between absorption and emission spectra. [4 marks]

(d) State the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. [2 marks]

(e) Explain what is ultraviolet catastrophe in relation to black body radiation. [2 marks]
(f) In particle annihilation, how is momentum and energy conserved? [2 marks]
(g) What is cimptin scattering? [2 marks]
(h) Explain the following terms.

QUESTION TWO:
(a) From Bohr postulates, develop an expression for the energy of an electron En and radius of orbit rn. [14 marks]

(b) From En obtained in (a) above, use transition of electrons to obtain a value for R (Rydbergs) constant and calculate its value. Compare with standard value. [6 marks]

QUESTION THREE:
(a) The electron in the hydrogen atom makes a transition from n=2 energy state to the ground state. Find the wave length and frequency of the emitted photen. [8 marks]

(b) The paschen series for the hydrogen atom corresponds the electron transition that terminate in the energy state n=3.
(i) Find the longest wavelength photen emitted and determine its energy.
(ii) Find the shortest wavelength photen emitted in the paschen series. [12 marks]
QUESTION FOUR:
(a) Zicorniura (Z=40) has 2 electrons in an incomplete d shell.
(i) What are the values of n and l for both electrons?
(ii) What are all possible values for M_1 and M_s
(iii) What is the electron configuration in the ground state for zirconium? [8 marks]

(b) When an electron drops from the M shell to a vacancy in the K shell, the measured wavelength of the emitted x-ray is found to be 0.101 nm. Identify the element. [12 marks]

QUESTION FIVE:
(a) An FM radio transmitter has a power output of 150 u.l and operates at a frequency of 99.7 MHz. How many phatons per second does the transmitter emit? [8 marks]

(b) What minimum accelerating voltage would be required to produce an x-ray with a wavelength of 0.03 n m? [8 marks]
(c) A 50 g ball moves at 30 m/s if its speed is measured to an accuracy of 0.1%. What is the minimum uncertainty in its position? [4 marks]
