QUESTION ONE
a) Briefly describe the stages involved in a systems development cycle, starting with the original
identification of the problem by management and ending with a report back on successful (or
otherwise) implementation. (12 Marks)
b) State up to FOUR skills that the systems analyst would be expected to employ during this
cycle. (4 Marks)
c) Describe up to FOUR major human problems likely to be encountered by the systems analyst.
(4 Marks)
d) Use an appropriate diagram to describe the system theory concepts.
(10 Marks)

As systems design reaches its conclusion, a workable plan for the introduction of the system into the
business environment must be developed and approved.
a) Describe the activities you would consider to be included in your implementation plan and how
it would be presented. (8 Marks)
b) State four methods of system changeover that could be employed to achieve the
implementation of the system? (4 Marks)

QUESTION THREE
The Marketing department of an organisation requires a process to run against its customer database.
Customers who have not made a purchase in the past two years will have their database account status
field flagged as dormant. Any remaining customer who has not made a purchase in the previous 6
months is to be sent a letter offering them a discount if they make a purchase in the next month.
The discount offered will depend on the value of their last purchase; 10% if the sale was £500 or more
and 5% otherwise. For other customers, no action is required.
a) What aspect of this process makes the use of a decision table appropriate? (2 Marks)
b) Draw a decision table for the process. (10 Marks)
c) Write an algorithm for the process using structured English.

a) Explain the terms data warehouse, data mining and expert systems. (6 Marks)
b) Distinguish between bespoke and off-the-shelf systems, and indicate why one may be chosen
in favor of the other. (6 Marks)
You are employed as an analyst by a large car manufacturer. A project has just commenced to which
you have been assigned.The investigation stage of the project has been started and previous fact
finding interviews have been well documented. When you go to see some people who have not
previously been interviewed you find them hostile and unhelpful.
c) Identify up to EIGHT possible causes of their hostility. (8 Marks)
QUESTION FIVE.
Information systems development today involves more than just technical knowledge and skills. There
are ‘softer’ aspects that can contribute significantly towards the successful implementation of a
computerised information system. Discuss how the following technical and non-technical issues might
be addressed:
a) Security of data produced during the development of an information system. (10 Marks)
b) Professional conduct during the development process. (10 Marks)
