Question One
“An organization that trades in cell-phony was licensed to establish their operations in Kenya. The
management resolved to carry out a systematic publicity campaign of them. To do this, they carried out
a study on circulation and readership trends of various newspapers. The purpose of this study was to
assist the new company carry out its advertising campaigns in the dailies. They visited each newspaper
and interviewed their public relations officers on their circulation and readership trends as a way of
collecting data”.
Required
a) Analyse the data collection methodology for this study. (15 Marks)
b) Demonstrate with reasons, the methods you would employ to present the data obtained from such
interviews (15 Marks)

a) The hallmarks of a research can be said to be the criteria one can use to state that a research is excellent or
genuine. Analyse the hallmarks of research. (10 Marks)

b) A researcher must find a research topic and formulate it into a research problem so that it becomes
susceptible to research. A research problem is some kind of difficulty that a researcher experiences in the
context of either theoretical or practical situation and wants to obtain a solution for the same. When does a
problem exist? (10 Marks)

a) A hypothesis explains facts or phenomena as an unproven testable proposition and or tentative
supposition. It is a statement of assumptions. Explain the characteristics of a testable hypothesis
must have. (10 Marks)
b) A research design is an arrangement of conditions for the collection and analysis of data in a
manner that aims to combine relevance to the research purpose with economy in procedure. A good design is
flexible, appropriate, efficient and economical. It should minimize bias and maximize reliability of the data
collected and analysed. What considerations would you accord to such wonderful research design?
