QUESTION ONE
a) A research problem refers to some kind of difficulty the researcher might encounter or experience
in the context of either a theoretical or practical situation, which he or she would like to resolve and
find a solution to. Identification of a research problem is a pre-condition to conducting research.
Briefly describe four components of a research problem. (8 Marks)
b) You are to conduct a research entitled “A survey of working capital financing policies among
microfinance institutions in Nairobi”.

QUESTION FOUR
a) Write brief notes on the following tests of hypotheses:
i) Two tailed tests (3 Marks )
ii) Right tailed test (3 Marks )
iii) Left tailed test (3 Marks )
b) The management of Domestic finance ltd, a hire purchase company is concerned about the
increasing default of debts resulting into bad debts. The management has decided that if the mean
of defaulted debts is more than sh 40,000 then the item on hire purchase should be repossessed
immediately. The credit control manager selects a sample of 80 delinquent accounts and finds the
mean default amount to be sh43,000 with a standard deviation of sh 7,500.
Required
i) Determine if the items should be repossessed. Test at 5% level of significance
(9 Marks)
ii) State any assumptions made in (i) above. (2 Marks)

QUESTION FIVE
a) Differentiate between rank correlation and moment correlation coefficients. (4 Marks)
b) A panel of experts from the kenya Bureau of standards tested eight makes of refrigilators for their
quality and ranked them starting from the best quality. The table below shows the ranks assigned
by the panel of experts and the retail prices of the eight refrigilators.

Required
i) Compute the correlation coefficient between the ranks of the quality and the ranks of

ii) Compute the coefficient of determination between the quality ranks and the retail price.
Interpret your results. ( 10 Marks )
