INSTRUCTIONS: Answer ALL Questions in Section A and ONLY ONE in Section B.



Section A

1. Explain health implications of global warming and climatic change. [6 marks]

2. Briefly discuss the causes of rapid urbanization in Kenya and show the likely Health outcomes. [6 marks]

3. Giving examples, differentiate between primary and secondary air pollutants and explain why inhalation is the fastest route of exposure to such pollutants. [6 marks]

4. Outline the negative health implications of geophagy and recommend in which these can be avoided. [6 marks]

5. Identify and describe three (3) major environmental health challenges facing Kenya.
[6 marks]

6. Outline the clinical manifestations of the following disease and explain why it is considered a geological disease.

a) Podoconiosis [3 marks]
b) Arsenosis [3 marks]

7. Briefly, explain the roles of the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), with reference to the EMCA 1999 Act of Kenya. [6 marks]

8. Explain the relevance of precautionary principle in the protection of human health and the environment. [6 marks]

SECTION B

9. As a Public Health Officer, you have been invited to join a team of experts who will be undertaking a Health Impact Assessment (HIA) of a proposed dam in Juja. Identify the health impacts (both positive and negative) of this project and suggest possible measures that can be put in place to curb the identified negatives. [22 marks]

10. As a Public Health professional, you have been assigned the duty of inspecting a housing project in a place whose geology is known to have elevated Radon levels. Discuss the methods and mechanism you will expect/recommend to the proponents to reduce radon levels in their houses. [22 marks]

11. Discuss the historical background of the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) and describe its roles environmental and health protect. [22 marks]
