BROWN

With less than two weeks to go before the April 2 election, Nate Brown withdrew his candidacy, leaving Sharon Lynch and the Rev. Raymond Prince to battle in what is now a one-on-one race for the Sixth Ward City Council Seat.

Brown announced his withdrawal and gave his support to Lynch at a Friday meeting of the Pachyderms, a local Republican club. Despite Brown’s endorsement choice, prince said that the outcome of the race will not be affected.

“We always thought that Mrs. Lynch was the one to beat,” Prince said. “We never did consider Nate Brown a threat. The people who were going to vote for him are still up in the air, and it’s up to us to go get them. We still think we have a good chance to win.”

Although Lynch, 34, is grateful for Brown’s endorsement, she is cautious abut how much influence it will have on the race’s outcome. Like Prince, she said she will have to go out and campaign for that vote.

Brown-first add

“Just because Brown has said he supports me and will encourage his supporters to vote for me, I cannot assume they will. I still have to earn their vote. If Nate and I share the same views on some of the issues, then hopefully that would sway some of his supporters to vote for me.”

With brown’s abrupt withdrawal, speculation surfaced that council contenders are playing party politics in a non-partisan race.

But Brown, 26, said that being a Republican had nothing to do with his decision to endorse Lynch. “She’s not a Republican,” he said. ” I think she’s an independent. Anyway, I gave her my support because we share common ground.”

Lynch and prince seem to agree on at least one thing: They both say that the city council race is non-partisan and that their views reflect issues not party affiliation.

“I am not a Republican or a Democrat,” Lynch said. “I am registered to vote, but I vote for the person and the issue.”

Prince, 30, has said that Lynch and Brown have tried to label him a liberal. “Labels like ‘conservative and ‘liberal’ have no place in local politics,” he said. “I have conservative views on some issues and liberal vies on others.”

Brown-second add

Brown, a special sections coordinator for a local newspaper, cited work obligations and a “crippled campaign” as the reasons for withdrawing from the race.

He also was unable to canvas the sixth ward and meet other campaign obligations because of time constraints due to his job.
Brown blamed Shelia Sweeney, his volunteer campaign manager, for failing in her responsibility to run his campaign manager, for failing in her responsibility to run his campaign. He said the last time he saw or heard from her was on March 5.

“It was her responsibility, “Brown said. “She was not working, not going to school – all she had to do was run my campaign. She started but she didn’t finish. When the campaign structure started to fall apart, there was no way to recover.”

Although he was unable to contact Sweeney for three weeks, Brown made no effort to repair his failing campaign. After efforts to find Sweeney failed, Brown did not seek a replacement. When asked why, he said: “We’ve dropped out for the campaign. We’ve given our reasons, and that’s that.”

In addition to Sweeney’s unexplained disappearance, Brown’s campaign treasurer Charlie Roemer quit.

Prince said Brown left the campaign “obviously because he felt he could not run against us.”

“Shelia isn’t the one who was running,” prince said. “When I got into the race, I knew what my schedule was. If I didn’t have the time, I wouldn’t have gotten into it. He would have known that.
