Question One (Compulsory) [30 Marks]
(a) Explain briefly what is a wireless access point? [2 marks]
(b) Explain what you understand by the following terms [4 marks]
(i) Bit
(ii) Communication medium Bandwidth
(iii) Software
(iv) Computer Network
(c) Explain the TWO major functions performed by operating system software. [4 marks]
(d) When purchasing a desktop computer, there are basic computer parts you check for.
These include: the monitor, system unit, keyboard and mouse. [4 marks]
(i) Explain the two types of memory devices that are housed in the system unit.

(ii) Explain how the above two types of memory devices complement each other.
(e) Given a computer network, explain what is communications media? With relevant
examples, explain the various types of communications media. [4 marks]
(f) Explain any TWO differences between a word processor application and a spreadsheet
application. Give at least TWO examples of each. [4 marks]
(g) What is a local area network (LAN)? Explain the importance of a LAN in a university.
[3 marks]
(h) Explain the importance of using Database Management Systems Software such as
Microsoft Access. [2 marks]
(i) Explain the proper procedure of shutting down a computer. Why is it important to
follow this procedure when you can simply switch off the main socket? [3 marks]

(a) Computers are prone to security threats from the outside world. Your friend can also
pose a security threat to your computer; explain measures you would take to protect your
data and programs in your computer. [4 marks]
(b) Consider the word document paragraphs show below. Use it to answer the questions that
follow.
Microsoft Word is an essential tool. Its ease of use
has made Microsoft Word one of the most widely used
applications software currently on the market.
Therefore, it’s important to become familiar with the
various facets of this software, since it allows for
compatibility across multiple computers as well as
collaborative features.
Word is fairly simple program to use for completing
simple tasks. However, it may be more difficult to
learn how to explore the more advanced possibilities
of Word.
(i) Explain how you would underline the second line in the first paragraph shown
above. [3 marks]
(ii) Outline the steps you would take to append reference footnote on the word
software (e.g. software

(a) Explain the main use of presentation graphics software. Why is MS Office PowerPoint
software bundled together with MS Office Word software? [4 marks]
(b) Explain any TWO advantages of using presentation software such as Microsoft Office
PowerPoint over ordinary chalk and board in lectures. [4 marks]
(c) Explain why computers and knowledge on the use of computers are important in schools
and other learning institutions. [4 marks]
(d) Given an Excel sheet with data in the cells B1, B2, B3, B4 and B5.
(i) In cell B6, write a function to find the total of the five cells. [2 marks]
(ii) Suppose there is an error in the result B6 and we cannot find the total. State and
explain any THREE possible errors expected. [6 marks]

computers in the society. Other than the use of computers in learning institutions, explain
five points you would consider in your presentation. [5 marks]
(b) Is the Internet important in school/learning institutions such as a university? Explain
any THREE reasons to support your answer. [4 marks]
(c) Distinguish between Internet Server computer and a Web Client computer. [4 marks]
(d) With the aid of a well labeled diagram, explain the functional hardware components
of a computer system. [7 marks]
