Answer all questions in Section A and any two in Section B. (70 Marks)
SECTON A: (40 Marks). Answer All questions.
1. (a) Define the following terms:
(i) Biopsy [1 mark]
(ii) Organ [1 mark]
(iii) Pathogenesis [1 mark]
(iv) Cytopathic effect [1 mark]
(v) Pathognomonic lesion [1 mark]
(b) Briefly explain what you understand by the following terms:
(i) Hernia [1 mark]
(ii) Anaemia [1 mark]
(iii) Jaundice [1 mark]
(iv) Pneumonia [1 mark]
(v) Post mortem [1 mark]
2. List the 5 signs of inflammation and explain why each of them occurs. [10 marks]

3. A pregnant dog is hit by a vehicle. It bleeds a lot but the Veterinary doctor manages to
control the bleeding.
(a) If you were to take the blood of the dog for analysis, what kind of anaemia would you
see:
(i) While the animal is bleeding? Explain why. [2½ marks]
(ii) A few days after the bleeding has been controlled? Explain why.
[2½ marks]
(b) During recovery, the owner neglects the dog and does not give her enough nutritious
food. List two types of anaemia the dog would have as a result of this and explain
why in each case. [5 marks]
4. Describe pathology of pregnancy under the following headings:
(a) Extra-uterine pregnancy [3 marks]
(b) Foetal mummification [3 marks]
(c) Dropsy of foetal membranes [4 marks]
SECTION B: (30 Marks). Answer any two Questions.
5. Discuss the pathogenesis of jaundice (icterus) under the following headings:
(i) Pre-hepatic icterus
(ii) Intra-hepatic icterus
(iii) Post-hepatic icterus
In each case, clearly state which Bilirubin will be found in circulation and also give at
least one aetiology of the specific type of icterus. [15 marks]
6. (a) What is a cancer? [1 mark]
(b) List at least two characteristics of a cancer. [2 marks]
(c) List at least 4 features you would see if you examined a cancerous tissue
histologically. [4 marks]
(d) Define the term “carcinogen” and discuss how various types of carcinogens
bring about cancer, giving examples in each case. [8 marks]

7. Sample collection is a very important procedure in pathology since definitive diagnosis
largely depends on it. Discuss this statement in detail, guided by the following headings:
(a) Differentiating between several diseases or conditions [3 marks]
(b) Sampling tools [3 marks]
(c) Quality and quantity of samples [3 marks]
(d) Packaging and labeling of samples [3 marks]
(e) Transportation of samples [3 marks]
