i) Answer QUESTION ONE and any other TWO questions.
ii) This is a CLOSED BOOK exam. No reference materials are allowed in the exam room.
iii) No mobile phone allowed in the exam room (make sure to switch it off and leave it with the invigilator if you carried one).

SECTION A (COMPULSORY)

QUESTION ONE (COMPULSORY) [30 MARKS]

a) Basic knowledge of computers has become a necessity in institutions of higher learning. Giving reasons explain why the knowledge on computers is a critical need to students in these institutions. [4 marks]

b) After a successful completion of this course, you are approached to advise an organization on automating their offices. What relevant factors would you emphasize in your advice for the purchase of computers? [2 marks]

c) Spreadsheet software uses both formula and functions in calculations. Distinguish between a formula and a function. In your answer, give a distinguishing example between the two. [4 marks]

d) Explain what you understand by the term volatile and non-volatile with regard to computer memory. [2 marks]

e) State and explain the type of a computer network you expect to find in your computer laboratory or school. Discuss any two uses of such a network. [4 marks]


f) Distinguish between system software and application software. Give at least two examples of each. [3 marks]

g) Explain how secondary storage such as a hard disk complements the main memory of the computer. [3 marks]

h) After collecting your data in the field, your lecturer has asked you to prepare a report for your findings and a short summary of the findings. You are needed to present your summary to the board of undergraduate studies. Explain with relevant examples the software applications you will use. [4 marks]

i) Explain why software is the most important component in your computer. [2 marks]

j) Explain what you understand by the following terms.

i) Bit
ii) Byte

SECTION B (ANSWER ANY TWO QUESTIONS FROM THIS SECTION)

QUESTION TWO [20 MARKS]

a) Computers are prone to security threats from the outside world. Your friend can also pose a security threat to your computer; explain measures you would take to protect your data and programs stored in your computer. [6 marks]

b) Explain why a university needs a local network of the computers in the university as well as the Internet. [4 marks]

c) Given a sample Microsoft Excel sheet with data in cells A3, B3, C3, D3, E3 and F3 student marks for six subjects,

i) Write a formula to calculate the total marks for the student. [3 marks]
ii) Other than using a formula, write a function in MS Excel that will calculate the total marks for the student. [2 marks]
iii) From your answers for the formula and function, explain why a function is more appropriate compared to a formula. [3 marks]
iv) Also, given the student marks, write a function to calculate the average mark for the student. [2 marks]

QUESTION THREE [20 MARKS]

a) Explain any FIVE Care and maintenance of computers practices. [10 marks]

b) Explain any TWO safety measures you should take when reading and responding to electronic mails. [4 marks]

c) Giving relevant examples, explain the difference between temporary storage devices and permanent storage devices. [6 marks]


QUESTION FOUR [20 MARKS]

a) In your research work, you came up with research findings that require some simple analysis to generate information that can be used to draw conclusions.
i) State and justify your answer on the type of software you would use to analyze your data. [3 marks]


ii) Explain any one type of graphical representation you would use to present your analysis. [1 mark]

iii) Suppose your research work was about different communications media in a computer network. Explain what are communications media and the major types of this communications media.
[4 marks]

b) After purchasing a computer, you just discovered that some of the work you intended to accomplish such as playing games could not be done. After consultation, you learnt that you can increase your computer’s abilities. Explain any TWO ways you might have learnt to increase the abilities of your computer. [4 marks]

c) Distinguish between the Internet and the Web. [4 marks]

d) Explain what you understand by the following terms and give relevant examples:
i) Web browser [2 marks]
ii) Search engine [2 marks]


Question Five [20 marks]

a) Using a well labeled diagram, explain the role of the various functional components of a computer. [10 marks]

b) Your department chairman has asked you to prepare a presentation on the application of computers in a learning institution such as a school you will attend for your teaching practice. Explain any FOUR applications you would include in your presentation. [8 marks]
c) Explain the proper procedure of shutting down a computer. Why is it important to follow this procedure when you can simply switch off the main socket? [2 marks]
