SECTION I: (COMPULSORY) (30 MARKS)

1. Describe the following sources of farm power and give the merits and demerits of each.

(i) Human power [2 marks]
(ii) Animal power [2 marks]
(iii) Mechanical power [2 marks]
(iv) Biogas energy [2 marks]

2. State the function of the following parts found in a tractor drive train

(i) Clutch [1 mark]
(ii) Differential [ 2 marks]
(iii) Final drives [1 mark]

3. State four (4) major differences between diesel and petrol engines. [8 marks]

4. (i) List any ten (10) attributes of a good tractor operator. [5 marks]

(ii) Although having a farm tractor is good for field activities it may also bring along some disadvantages. List five (5) disadvantages of owning a farm tractor.
[5 marks]

SECTION B: ATTEMPT ANY TWO QUESTIONS. EACH QUESTION CARRIES
20 MARKS.


5. (i) Explain the working principle of a diesel 4-stroke engine and illustrate in a
table form your explanation. [10 marks]

(ii) Briefly explain two main reasons for carrying out maintenance work on tractors. List down four (4) maintenance work commonly carried out on farm tractors.
[10 marks]

6. (i) Explain what happens to the piston, valves, spark plug and fuel-air mixture
during the compression stroke and exhaust stroke of a four stroke petrol engine. [8 marks]

(ii) List and describe four (4) basic components of the exhaust system. [8 marks]

(iii) State at least four (4) main functions of an engine lubrication system.
[4 marks]

7. (i) Your father has requested you to advise him on the tractor to purchase for his
farm use. Briefly explain the various factors he should consider in order to select the appropriate size of tractor for his farm. [10 marks]

(ii) Give four (4) major components of a power transmission system in agricultural tractor. [4 marks)

(iii) Name and explain three (3) types of PTO system. [6 marks]
