1. (a) Explain the conclusions and importance of the Hawthorne studies to a modern manager. [10 marks]

(b) Explain the assumptions of scientific management theory and clearly show the drawbacks of the theory. [10 marks]

(c) It is very common to hear that organizations are restructuring. Explain the meaning of organizations structure and clearly describe the components of structure that are of importance to managers. [10 marks]

2. (a) Explain the reasons why a manager may have a wide span of management.
[7 marks]

(b) Explain the basis under which an organization can be structurally divided.
[8 marks]
(c) Explain the limitations of centralization of authority in modern management.
[5 marks]

3. (a) Although all managers agree that the organization must be effective, the problem is usually agreeing on what organization effectiveness means. Explain the Competing Values Approach to organization effectiveness showing the basic sets of competing values. [10 marks]

(b) As a manager of an organization in the process of implementing change, what would make the employee resist change at an organizational level? [10 marks]

4. (a) Your brother has been suspended from school and you are upset. After talking to him you realize that there was no cause for suspension, there were facts unknown to the Deputy Principle who suspended him. Discuss how you would approach the school authorities to resolve the matter. [10 marks]

(b) Despite the many benefits derived from delegation, many managers are not keen to delegate responsibilities. Discuss the reasons for not delegating. [10 marks]
