1. (a) Explain the assumptions of Fredrick Taylors scientific management theory and show how a modern manager can apply the theory in his organization. [10 marks]

(b) Discuss the propositions of Max Weber theory of Bureaucracy (1864-1920) and its application to management today. [10 marks]

(c) Differentiate between centralization and decentralization and explain why managers are nowadays preferring decentralized systems. [10 marks]

(d) Explain the conclusions and importance of Hawthornes studies to a modern manager. [10 marks]

2. (a) Discuss the disadvantages of the tall organizational structures as opposed to flat organizational structures. [8 marks]


(b) Despite the many benefits that accompany delegation of authority, many managers are not keen to delegate. Explain the various obstacles to effective delegation. [8 marks]

(c) Explain the key features of an organization. [4 marks]

3. (a) You have been approached by ABC Enterprises, a new food manufacturing company to help in designing and establishing departments. Advise the company of the options available. [10 marks]

(b) Conflicts are an inevitable part of our interactions with others. This is more so in modern formal organization. Explain the possible consequences of conflicts in organizations. [10 marks]


4. (a) Alice, an organizations in the tourism industry has passed a policy which requires all employees to wear uniform. The move has not been popular and has faced resistance from the workers. The management has approached you as a consultant to help bring calm in the organization. Using the change model proposed by Kurt Lewin, advice the organization on the way forward. [10 marks]


(b) Although all managers agree that the organization must be effective the problem is usually agreeing on what organization effectiveness is since it means different things to different people. Explain the System Resource Approach to organization effectiveness and show the limitations of this approach. [10 marks]
