1. a) Define the following terms;


i) The joule
ii) The Newton
iii) The watt

b) A shaping machine has a cutting rate of 40 strokes per minute. If in a cutting operation the cutting force at the tools is 1200 N and length of the cut is 200 mm. Calculate ;

i) Work done in 40 strokes.

ii)The power consumed in 1 minute.

c) As a water pump, pumps 1000 litres of water to a height of 60 min in 1 minute calculate.

2. a) Define the following forms of mechanical energy.

i) Potential energy.

ii) Kinetic energy

b) In a forging operation, a drop-forging top die of mass 60 kg is lifted to a height of 3m above the work piece and allowed to fall freely on to the work piece. Determine:
(take g =9.8m/s2)

i) the potential energy of the top die at 3m.
ii) the kinetic energy of a die at impact.
iii) the velocity of the die at impact. (10 marks)

c)A vehicle of a mass 1 tonne is moving at 72 km/hr. What''s is the kinetic energy of the vehicle at this speed. (6 marks)

3. a) Define the following terms and distinguish whether they are vector or scalar quantities.
i) displacement

ii)Velocity

iii)Speed. (6 marks)

(b) A car starts from rest and is accelerated uniformly at the rate of 2 m/s2 for 6 s then maintains a constant speed for half a minute.The brakes are the applied and the vehicle uniformly retarded to rest in 50s.
