1. Discuss ten (10) writing skills and techniques that a journalist should use to attract the attention of the readers. [15 Marks]

2. Discuss the shortcomings of a telephone interview as a means of gathering information. [15 Marks]

3. Giving reasons, decide whether each of the following quotations should be printed as quotations or as paraphrases. Rewrite those you think should be paraphrases.
[15 Marks]

(a) “The population has grown form 100,000 to almost 250,000 in just 10 years,” the
MP said.

(b) “This year’s team is the best tennis team that this school has ever seen, and I think
we have what it takes to win at national”, fourth form John Mbaya said.

(c) “The boys team has six returning lettermen, including three seniors,” Coach Quentin Kidd said.

(d) Governor John Ragwa said, “We will observe the Mashujaa day on October 20 with a special assembly at 1.pm.”

4. Good sports writing, unlike newswriting is a mixture of fact and interpretation spiced with comment. Discuss. [15 Marks]

5. “An investigative reporter is half cop, half poet” (Bolch and Miller, 1978). Discuss the statement above. [15 Marks]
