(a) Define the following terms, giving examples

(b) Write the following numbers in index form.

(c) Solve the equation

(d) Given log??y=T.3845 and log??x=T.3010 ? ?
State

(i) Log?(x^2 y^3 )
(ii) Log?(y^(1/3) )
(iii) Log ( y/x) [6 marks]

(e) Solve the equation

x^2+5x+6=0 [3 marks]

(f) In how many ways can a committee of 5 persons be formed from 6 men and 5 women if

(i) No conditions given
(ii) Only a maximum of two men is allowed in a committee. [3 marks]

(g) Expand out (a+b)^(5 )up to the term in ?(b?^2). [3 marks]

(h) Given that one bag of animal feed of type A costs Ksh 280 shillings and that of type B costs Ksh 350 shillings. Calculate the cost of 5 bags of the mixture of A and B mixed in the ratio 3:4. [3 marks]

(b) Indicate the region given by the inequalities shown below:

State the co-ordinates of two points in the given region. [7 marks]

(c) State the equation of perpendicular line to a line given by the equation
3x+2y=6 passing through point (3,4). [4 marks]

(d) State the co-ordinates of four major points on the circumference of the circle given by the equationx^2+y^2+6x+4y-12=0 [6 marks]

Question Three

(a) Find the number of terms in the following AP and state its sum 2+4+6+- - -+46.
[4 marks]

(b) Simplify without using tables or calculators.

(Log 125-log?25)/(Log 25+log?5 ) [4 marks]
(c) Calculate the volume and the surface area of a cylindrical milk container whose diameter is 14 cm and 14 cm in height. [6 marks]

(d) Solve the simultaneous equations

?Log?_2 (x+1)-1=2?Log?_2 y and
?Log?_2 (x-5y+4)=0 [6 marks]

Question Four

(a) Plot the curve y=-x^2+2x+1 [3 marks]

(b) Solve the equation 4^(x+1)=32 [3 marks]

(c) Given f(x)=x^3-5x+2,g(x)=x-2 obtain

(ii) gof(x)
(iii) (f(4))/(g(4))
(iv) gof(4) [8 marks]

(d) A farmer pays the farm workers at the rate of Ksh 50 per hour, how much did this farmer spend on a day when paying two sets of workers as follows:

(i) 10 workers working from 5.30 am to 2.30 pm
(ii) 20 workers working form 2.30 pm to 5.30 am. [6 marks]
