Answer Question ONE and any other THREE Questions

1. (a) Describe in detail the steps followed in hypothesis testing. [7 Marks]

(b) Distinguish between the following pair of terms

(i) Type I error and type II error.
(ii) Null and alternative hypothesis
(iii) Point and interval estimate
(iv) Statistic and parameter [8 marks]

(c) A sample of five students had a mean of 2.9 in a statistic test. An earlier research had indicated that the overall mean of the class is 2.2. Test the hypothesis that the five students mean is not different from the class mean against the alternative hypothesis that the five students performed better if the sample standard deviation is 0.55. (Take ?=0.05 ). [6 marks]

(d) State and explain four applications of statistics in social sciences. [4 marks]

2. In a voter survey, people of different religious affiliations were asked whether they had voted for Jubilee or Amani coalition in the last general elections. The results are as shown in the table below.

5. (a) The mean IQ of 35 students was given as 102 with standard deviation of 6.02

(i) Determine the range of IQ at 68% CI. [4 marks]

(ii) What is the probability that the IQ will not lie in the range in (i) above. [2 marks]
(b) Discuss the importance of reliability and validity of measurement in research. [4 marks]

(c) It is usually alleged that statistics can be used to justify anything. Discuss this statement and give some specific examples of such cases. [5 marks]
