QUESTION ONE (30 MARKS)

(a) Explain the meanings of the following terms: [4 marks]

(i) Data.
(ii) Information.
(iii) Information system.
(iv) Knowledge.

(b) Outline any four advantages of using a computer based information system over manual information system. [4 marks]


(c) A machine language is the language the CPU use to process and represent data. A binary numbering system is preferred in designing the computer system as the machine language. Explain the concept behine the use of binary numbering system.

(d) Perform the following numbering system conversion. [6 marks]

(i) 11Ø1Ø12 into decimal.
(ii) 4658 into binary.

(e) Explain the series of events that take place during an instruction cycle. [4 marks]

(f) State and explain any four functions of the CPU in a computer system. [4 marks]

(g) Okello was copying a 10 GB of a movie from a DVD to a hard disk. Calculate the time it took for Okello to copy the data if the average on speed was 120KB/S. [4 marks]

(iii) Disk defragmentation.

(b) Calculate the maximum capacity for a hard disk having 200 tracks where each track has 5000 sectors and each sector can accommodate a maximum of 512 bytes. Explain your answer in MB. [4 marks]

(c) Give two examples of each of the following: [4 marks]

(i) Magnetic storage disks.
(ii) Optical storage disk.
(iii) Sequential access storage device.
(iv) Direct access storage device.

(d) Outline the difference between the following: [6 marks]

(i) Microprocessor and processor.
(ii) Primary memory and secondary memory.
(iii) RAM and ROM.
