Most people believe being light skin means you are beautiful despite the popular phrase, black is beauty. Therefore, most women opt for skin lightening products without caring If they will harm them or not.

In Kenya, most women use skin lightening cream from as early as primary school. This may happen because at this age, most girls become conscious of their appearance and have long been socialized to believe that they would look better with lighter skin.

Out of ignorance, they tend to purchase anything that works, and usually it is a steroid cream. Hence, the cycle of skin problems begins and continues throughout high school.

A research on skin care has established that high school-aged girls are very receptive to anything that can help them achieve their skin care objectives. They are ready to absorb information, however misleading it may be.

Once a schoolgirl starts to use steroid-based cream on her skin, she embarks on a journey of skin troubles that will lead to prematurely aged skin at the age of 30 or so years. This is a journey that most women have traveled, and are trying hard to correct.

Skin care information is vital and should be dispersed early in life. This way, the young girls get the power to make informed choices that will save them from many problems later on. It is the responsibility of parents and teachers to discourage girls from using skin lighteners.
