1. Answer question 1 (one) and any other two questions.
2. Marks will be awarded for clarity and originality of ideas.
3. Do not write on the question paper.

1. (a) Explain what management is and the vertical levels of management showing
which skills are most appropriate to each level. [10 marks]

(b) The theory of bureaucracy was developed by Max Weber (1864 – 1920) against a backdrop of businesses that were run in family like manner. Weber envisioned organizations which were impersonal and he referred to this as bureaucracy. Briefly set out any five characteristics of bureaucracy as suggested by Weber.
[5 marks]

(c) The divisional structure is usually appropriate for large organizations. This is because it offers various advantages to management. Highlight these advantages.
[5 marks]

(d) “Managers have a duty to ensure that the business makes profits. They should therefore not pay attention to other stakeholders as long as the business is profitable. It is not right to go using the business’ money on other issues”.
Discuss. [10 marks]


2. (a) Explain the task environment of a business and outline any 4 elements in the task
environment giving practical illustrations of how they can affect a manager’s job.
[10 marks]
(b) An effective leader should be able to tap into the potential of groups in the organization. Distinguish between formal and informal groups and show the pros and cons of groups in organizations. [10 marks]


3. (a) The contingency theory of management suggest that there are no universal
principles of managing. A successful structure therefore depends on the organization’s unique situation. Explain what a structure is and set out the determinants of structure. [10 marks]

(b) Giving practical illustrations from businesses around you, explain why it is important for a manager to control business activities. [10 marks]


4. (a) With the increase in inflation and poverty levels, it has become common place to
find employees complaining that they are underpaid. It is amazing to realize that most organizations on the other hand will claim to pay their employees fairly. What factors determine how much an organization pays its workers? [10 marks]

(b) It is easy to assume that all managers plan. However in practice most managers do not really plan. What hinders managers from planning and as a good manager how will you overcome these hindrances? [10 marks]
