Examinations are part of learning and are therefore necessary. Proper preparation is a necessary requirement if one wants to perform well in a test. However sometimes students fail not because they didn’t know but because of how they approach the questions. It’s important therefore that one pays attention to instructions and develop a proper way of answering questions. This article provides a detailed criteria on how to approach examinations question.

Choice of questions.

Examination papers can be of different structures for example some may require you to choose what questions to answer while others require you to answer all questions given. A candidate should read through the whole of the question paper, noting the specific questions one is capable and expects to answer. When given an opportunity to choose it’s important to choose questions wisely as questions chosen ultimately determines the overall marks earned .Begin with questions that you consider easier then move to those you consider more challenging as it gives you ample time to think through the harder questions.

Pay particular attention to time.

Allocate time to each and every question equally .It’s also wise to allocate a little less time on questions that are not so demanding and depending on the complexity of the question, allocate a little more time to more complex questions –those that require one to be so involved for example answers that require diagrammatic illustrations, complex calculations and specific details. Ensure that after completing the paper you have a little time to go through the paper before submission.

Questions requiring precise answers.

The manner in which the questions are answered is very important as it determines the total marks a candidate will earn in every question. Providing non- exhaustive answers will earn you less marks. Each given question may require one to explain, define, discuss, state,

outline, state and explain, identify, examine, compare, evaluate and so on. It’s important to know what is required under each of the outlined instructions .There those questions that do not require comprehensive answers for example define, outline, state or identify. To state or outline is basically to express something either in writing or speech without providing much details. Therefore when asked to state or outline, it important to fully express each and every important point under the question asked clearly .You may add any relevant supplementary information- each point on its own sentence systematically. Questions requiring you to identify basically mean you point out and give a short description on the main idea. Each idea should be represented in its own sentence. 'Define' questions basically requires you to give a precise meaning of whatever subject in question.

Questions requiring comprehensive answers

However some questions requiring you to examine, compare, explain, illustrate or discuss require more comprehensive answers. ‘Examine’ kind of questions requires you to explore important issues of the topic in question a student should provide a critical analysis of the main ideas of the subject in question and provide supporting information. ‘Illustrate’ kind of questions mainly require the use of tools such as diagrams, graphs ,mathematical expressions ,examples, tables relevant to the question .It’s important however to provide explanations to such tools in relation to your answer. ‘Explain’ type of questions requires you to provide sufficiently detailed answers. When confronted with such kind of questions it’s important to assume that the examiner knows nothing about the subject .Ensure you provide exhaustive precise explanations to the main ideas and also provide definitions of key terms used. The answers should be coherent and systematic. ‘Discuss’ type of questions requires you to provide a brief debate of the subject in question considering all important aspects. It’s important to state the main idea first and then go ahead and provide the details. Lastly questions requiring you to compare or contrast basically require you to assess the differences and similarities of several aspects of the subject in question. Depending on the question and marks allocated you may be required to just compare their definitions or go ahead and look at differences and similarities based on other aspects.

Several other things to consider.

First, the hand writing should be legible and the points clearly written and questions answered properly numbered.Secondly, ensure you go through your answers after completion of the paper make any adjustments necessary and ensure no question is left unanswered .In addition ensure you carry all the materials necessary for that particular examinations for example calculators, mathematical tables and so on. Lastly, avoid examination irregularity-it’s important to be honest, cheating may ultimately rob you of the chance study in a particular institution or any other legal action may be taken against you .

In conclusion, as much as it’s important to study for tests it’s also important to understand how to handle examinations questions as both of these factors determine the overall marks earned. Relax and go through the questions conceptualizing what is asked, Think of the best answer then pay attention on how the answer should be given before putting it down on paper in addition to what is discussed above.
