Show your understanding of the use of the following concepts in research.

(i) Explain the phrase “correlation does not equal causation” why is the distinction so
important? [4 Marks]

(ii) Compare and contrast experimental and correlational research designs. What characteristics separate these two designs? [4 Marks]
(iii) Differentiate between validity and reliability. [4 Marks]

(iv) Differentiate between literature review and referencing. [4 Marks]

QUESTION 4

(i) A researcher wants to sample from the population such that gender and age groups are represented in proportion to their numbers within the population. Explain the best sampling techniques this study would use. [5 Marks]

(ii) In order to explore the effect of alcohol on visual perception an experiment was devised using two groups. The participants in the two groups were selected randomly. The first group performed a series of tasks when completely sober, while the second group performed the tasks after consuming alcohol to bring their BAC level up to at least 0.05%.

(a) Why did the experimenters choose to select the participants at random?

(b) (i) What are the terms that describe the first group (that were sober) and the
second group? [2 Marks]

(ii) Briefly explain the purpose (role) of the two groups within the
experimental design. [3 Marks]
