1. Summit Ltd has been performing poorly over the last five years. The company has been plagued by so many strikes and too much conflict among employees. It looks like the solution would be to sack everyone and hire new people. However a consultant has suggested to management that they need to restructure the organization.

(a) Explain what an organization is and the key features of an organization.

(b) Show how the scientific management principles can be used to improve
motivation and morale in summit Ltd. [10 Marks]

(c) What design options are available for Summit Ltd and when are they most
applicable. [15 Marks]

2. (a) Organizations can be conceptualized in various ways. Discuss the life cycle
perspective to organizations. [10 Marks]
(b) The most effective structure is the one that adjusts to the requirement of the environment. Differentiate between stable and unstable environments and explain the structures that are appropriate for reach. [10 Marks]

3. (a) Although all managers agree that the organization must be effective, the problem
is usually agreeing on what organization effectiveness is. Effectiveness means different things to different people. Explain the competing values approach to organization effectiveness showing the basic sets of competing values.

(b) As a manager of an organization in the process of implementing change, what would make the employees resist change at an organizational level?

4. (a) Traditionally, all conflict was seen to be bad. However, in modern times
managers appreciate that conflict is part and parcel of organizations and sometimes conflict can be useful. Explain any five structural sources of conflict. [10 Marks]

(b) It is very common to hear that organizations are restructuring. What is an
organization structure and what are the dimensions of structure that are of importance to managers.
